Jury hears arguments in trial of man accused of murdering 6 women
Ivan HillLOS ANGELES - Calling him a "serial killer" who hunted down his victims, a prosecutor today urged jurors to convict a former forklift operator of first-degree murder for strangling six women in 1993 and 1994.

"It's been 13 years. It's time that justice be done in this case," Deputy District Attorney John Monaghan told the Los Angeles jury hearing the trial of Ivan Hill.

Defense attorney Mitchell Bruckner acknowledged that Hill was responsible for the "series of horrible crimes" that occurred between Nov. 1, 1993, and Jan. 12, 1994, but said the evidence points to the conclusion that "these killings were not committed with deliberation."

"Ivan Hill killed these six women. There is no excuse for his actions ... He is guilty of six counts of second-degree murder," Bruckner told the jury.

Jurors are set to begin deliberations tomorrow, after receiving final instructions from Superior Court Judge Larry Paul Fidler.

The murder charges include the special circumstance allegations that there were multiple murders and that Hill, now 45, has an August 1989 conviction for a previous murder in Los Angeles County.

If convicted of first-degree murder and either or both of the special circumstance allegations, Hill could face the death penalty.

In his closing argument, the prosecutor said it would be up to jurors to decide if Hill's two phone calls to police after killing one of the victims were a cry for help, as the defense suggested, or somebody "taunting the police."

Jurors again heard a tape-recorded phone call in which Hill is heard telling a Pomona police dispatcher that his latest victim's body was at San Antonio Park in Ontario and a second call minutes later asking what was taking so long for police to arrive.

"Y'all better catch me before I kill again," he said in the second call.

The prosecutor said the first call from Hill -- identified by five people who knew his voice -- was "a confession" and the second call was the defendant talking about what he intended to do if he wasn't caught.

Monaghan told jurors that Hill hunted women like other people go deer- hunting. He was able to gain the trust of women who worked as prostitutes and "got pleasure" from the killings, the prosecutor said.

"If there ever was a case for premeditation and deliberation, this is it," Monaghan said.

Hill's attorney said the key issue was whether his client had carefully weighed the considerations for and against his choice and decided to kill, knowing the consequences.

Bruckner noted that Hill's brother testified that the defendant had been using a substantial amount of cocaine.

"Do you have any doubt that Ivan was smoking cocaine and his life was spiraling out of control at the time of these killings?" Bruckner said.

"We are not saying that the drugs made Ivan Hill kill these people," he said, arguing that "drugs contributed to his (in)ability to control himself."

The defense attorney said his client's actions in tying knots in ligatures around some of the victims' necks served no purpose and was evidence of compulsive behavior.

Hill was charged in November 2003 with the killings, after DNA linked him to the crimes near the Pomona (60) Freeway. Hill was in state prison at the time for robbery, attempted robbery and assault with a deadly weapon, and was set to be released in February 2004.

The women were found dead in public places such as parking lots or parks in Diamond Bar, Walnut and Pomona in eastern Los Angeles County and Chino and Ontario in San Bernardino County.
